The effect of eight weeks of inactivity after a combined training period on the expression of miR-155 and TLR-4 genes in women with multiple sclerosis (MS)

Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of detraining after combined training on the expression of miR-155 and TLR-4 in women with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS).
Methods: From a population of 90, 22 women with RRMS were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The experimental group performed eight weeks of combined training (aerobic and resistance training); then, they were detrained for eight weeks. The expression levels of TLR-4 and miR-155 were measured by RT-PCR before and after training and after detraining.
Findings: The data showed that the expression levels of miR-155 and TLR-4 were significantly lower than the control group after the exercise intervention (P=0.001) and after the detraining period (P=0.02). The difference in EDSS score was significant after combined training (P=0.015) and no training (P=0.018).
Conclusion: It seems that the anti-inflammatory effects of combined training in women with RRMS are very fragile compared to no training. Therefore, regular exercise is recommended for patients with RRMS.
