Background and objective: Not adhering to treatment advices has always been considered as an important and multidimensional problem in health field. Present study aimed to investigate the relationship between disease perception, coping strategies and social support with adherence to treatment among patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Materials and Methods: In this research study, a correlational method was used. Its statistical society included the cardiovascular patients in 2013 that had been under coronary artery bypass graft and percutaneous coronary intervention surgeries and pharmacotherapy. Research sample included 158 cardiovascular patients that were chosen through access sampling method. Measurement instruments included the scale of general adherence and special adherence, short form of disease perception, social support and coping strategies questionnaires. Data were analyzed by multiple correlation and step by step regression methods.

Results: The results showed that there was in order 0.20 and 0.19 significant relationship between general adherence to treatment with perceived support from special individual (p < 0.01) and perceived support from family (p < 0.05). Also, there was a 0.27 significant relationship between problems concentrated coping strategy and a -0.31 significant relationship between emotion concentrated coping strategy with specialized adherence to treatment (p < 0.01), but there was no significant relationship between specialized adherence to treatment with other research variables (p>0.05). Moreover, results of regression analysis showed that social support (16%) and coping strategies (32%) predict adherence to treatment among cardiovascular patients (p < 0.01).

Conclusion: More understanding of effective role of coping strategies and social support in adherence to treatment among cardiovascular patients is required for increasing their adherence to treatment.
